Choice Dialer

Fast, hands-free voice control for Android.

Please use Choice Dialer's feedback function (under menu) if you're having problems. I truly will try to help and your information may help me fix an issue quickly.

If you see a bug not on this list, please try updating to the latest Choice Dialer before reporting it, as it may already be fixed.

Bugs

  1. Music may not play over A2DP Bluetooth headsets after using Choice Dialer. Workaround: pause and resume the music playback using the music player's UI. I am looking into this bug.
  2. Android 2.2 and 2.3 broke the handling of the buttons on wired headsets. This is not my bug. Please visit the following links and "star" the issues to register your desire that they be fixed: bug 1, and bug 2.
  3. RingGuard is a problem. Workaround: uncheck the Choice Dialer setting "Fix notification volume"
  4. Some battery-indicator apps and replacement lockscreens break Choice Dialer. Try disabling or removing apps like that if (for instance) Choice Dialer cannot wake and unlock the screen on a Bluetooth button press.
  5. Some phones have trouble opening the microphone. Some users succeed by uninstalling and reinstalling or by restarting their phone. Let me know.
  6. If your contacts are all from Gmail or entered directly into your phone, Choice Dialer should be set to recognize "My Contacts". If you sync contacts from other database (e.g., Outlook), set Choice Dialer to use "All Contacts".
  7. Some phones have closed-source music apps I cannot integrate with. If yours is one, the excellent "Cubed" music player is free and should work fine.
  8. Some stock music apps do not work with mine for the simple reason that Android made the regrettable decision to make their APIs private, which prevents my remote control of the player. As these used to work, I find the policy so poorly considered that it is a defect, and I created an Android bug report. If you visit that page and click on the star to indicate you'd like to see it addressed, Android might remain powerful and flexible.

Please Note

  1. If your phone is running Android 2.2 or later and Bluetooth voice dialing is not working, try removing your phone's battery for 5 full minutes. Some users have reported that this fixes some underlying issue for them.
  2. Choice Dialer may not notice a newly created contact or song or album until its sync button is pressed. This is a design choice, as syncing is a slow operation. Users should press sync when they want to be sure Choice Dialer's information is up-to-date.
  3. If you are running "Choice Dialer+", ensure that you have uninstalled "Choice Dialer" (the Android 1.x app), or your use of launch buttons and Shake-and-Talk may invoke the wrong app. Ditto for the Free versions.
  4. You cannot call contacts at their custom-named places, only the stock ones (home, work, mobile, other)
  5. Times of day can only be said in 5 minute intervals. For example, 12:31 is not a time you can say to Choice Dialer. I think I will leave this as is, as the recognition is stronger this way.
  6. Integers (such as when you say how many hours later an event is scheduled for) are limited to 90 or so. That is, you cannot say "Schedule an event in 175 days".
  7. I use the speech recognizer built into the Android phones, which doesn't recognize every user well. Most users can improve performance by making sure they are speaking in the proper command format, have entered full names for their contacts (not just short first names) and have tried speaking at different distances from their phone.
